Quilting Services

Longarm Quilting Services

At Quilting by the Bay, all our longarm quilting services are completed on site on our Handi Quilter Forté machine using Pro Stitcher. One of our specialists will work with you to help choose the design and quilting thread that will turn your quilt top into a treasured quilt. We have a selection of over 1000 edge-to-edge (pantograph) designs available to enhance or compliment your quilt's design. A pantograph is a single pattern used on the entire quilt top. The time it takes for us to quilt your quilt is dependent upon the number of quilts currently in our quilting queue. We have several options for turning in your quilt to be quilted.

  • You can call to set up an appointment with one of our quilting specialists. The check-in process will take 10 - 15 minutes per quilt.
  • If you prefer contactless service, your quilt top and backing can be dropped off via curbside service during normal store hours. Call us when you arrive, and we will come out to your vehicle. We will contact you via email regarding quilting design and thread color.
  • You can mail your quilt top and backing to 1225 Airport Rd., Panama City, FL 32405. We suggest if you are shipping your quilt to us, that you enclose your quilt in packing material that guards against the elements. We will contact you via email regarding quilting design and thread color.

Quilt Top Preparation

Proper preparation of your quilt top and quilt back are essential to achieving a result that you will treasure for years to come. For best results please review the following considerations when getting your quilt top ready for long arming.

  • Quilt tops must be brought in clean, pressed, and free of noticeable odors, lint and loose threads, both front and back. Clip all loose threads from the front, back, and edges of your quilt. This is especially important if you have a dark color thread behind a light-colored fabric, as it may show through after being quilted.
  • We will load the quilt top, batting and backing independently onto our Longarm machine so please do not pin or baste the layers together. Use one safety pin to mark the top of your quilt top if it is directional.
  • Your quilt top should be trimmed to final finished size. We will not cut or trim your quilt top.
  • Check your piecing for open seams making sure all seams are sewn closed. The long arm machine cannot detect open seams and may get caught in the gaps, damaging the fabric.
  • If you have a pieced border, you should baste, or stay stitch, approximately 1/8” from the edge of the quilt top to prevent stretching and to keep seams that extend to the edges from separating.
  • The top should be free of embellishments such as buttons, beads, crystals, etc. and any pins. We also do not recommend longarm quilting for quilts with loose edge appliqué designs.

Your Batting

Due to variations in types of batting we require that you purchase your batting from Quilting by the Bay. There are many choices in fiber content including cotton, poly, wool or cotton/poly blends.

If you have any questions about batting, please do not hesitate to ask!

Your Backing

The backing must measure at least 8” longer and 8” wider than your quilt top. For example, if your quilt measures 52″ x 64″, the backing should measure at least 60″ x 72″. This is critical for long arm quilting because it allows the machine to quilt off the edges of your quilt and still have something for the clamps to grab a hold of. You can always trim excess once completed but you cannot add fabric later! Remember to iron/press for best results.

  • If you are seaming your backing, we recommend trimming off the selvage before sewing backing pieces together. For best results use a seam allowance between 1/4 and 1/2 inch, then press the seam open and flat. Your backing should have straight edges, and corners should be right angles.
  • Please note, it is not possible to perfectly center the top over the backing in both directions. A backing with a center monogram, or with a border, is likely to be "off" in the final product.
  • If you have pre-washed any of the fabrics in. your quilt it is recommended that you pre-wash all of them, including your backing fabric.

The price of quilting your quilt is determined by the size of the quilt in square inches. The quilting fee is quilt length times quilt width times $0.02 per square inch.

Quilting Fee = (Quilt Width (inches) x Quilt Length (inches) ) x $0.02
+ Cost of Batting
+ Cost of Thread

For example, if your quilt measures 75" x 85" then your quilt is 6375 square inches. The quilting fee in this example would be $127.50 plus the cost of batting and thread.

  • The minimum longarm quilting fee is $40.
  • If you request a densely quilted design there may be an additional fee.
  • Additional charges may apply to specialty fabrics or if special handling is required. Please note, it is not possible to perfectly center the top over the backing in both directions.

Our quilting service includes quilting the layers of your quilt together; it does not include trimming or binding your quilt.

Thread charge is $1 or $2 per bobbin depending on thread type. Thread used on the back side will be the same as the top thread (Top and bottom threads that contrast result in the appearance of specks of the opposing color).

We can provide contact details upon request for local individuals who can trim and bind your quilt, so it is completely finished.

If you have any additional questions, please give us a call at 850-215-7282.

Fullness Disclaimer

Fullness and/or puckers within a quilt and its borders cannot be quilted out. We cannot guarantee that puckers and tucks will not be sewn in. In some cases, excessive fullness in borders may result in the quilt corners not being square. The flatter your quilt top is, the better the finished quilt will be.

Mechanical Disclaimer

Please be aware that sewing machines including longarm machines are mechanical devices. Although we do our utmost to ensure perfect results every time, on very rare occasions mechanical problems can occur which may cause minor damage to a quilt top and/or backing.
